Helping Guatemala after Hurricane Stan

Dennis Gear (left) and Lance Classen of the U.S. Army talk to youth in Ixchigvan, 150 miles outside Guatemala City, Oct. 12. U.S. soldiers were there to distribute emergency relief after Hurricane Stan caused October floods and mudslides across Central America. Guatemala was hardest-hit, with about 1.5 million people affected and as many as 2,000 killed.

Stan completely washed away some villages and buried others in mud. Millions of subsistence farmers were left on mountainsides hard for relief groups toaccess. Doctors fear disease may spread quickly among survivors, who lack food, clean water and propersanitation.

The ELCA sent $50,000, to be divided equally between Lutheran World Federation and Norwegian Church Aid projects in Guatemala, and $100,000 for LWF projects across Central America. To help, send checks to: ELCA Disaster Response, P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764; or give by credit card at (800) 638-3522 or www.elca.org/giving.
