Just days before Katrina devastated her hometown of Gretna, La., Raychell Richard sings her way to the Gospel Dream finals, one of three selected from the New Orleans auditions.
Stars are born, the cliche goes, but the Gospel Music Channel wants to give aspiring singers a chance to shine with its first national competition, Gospel Dream. This was “dreamed up,” say sponsors, because Gospel music was missing from the popular American Idol talent search. Fall regional auditions in Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans and St. Louis drew hundreds of hopefuls. The three selected in each city will meet in Atlanta for the national finals that will be aired on the all-music TV network Nov. 30 and Dec.1 (Check www.GospelMusicChannel.com for local times.)
