Easter date hunt

Easter is the ultimate feast for Christians — the ultimate moveable feast.

The date has been set by the Jewish lunar calendar with the observance of Passover or by the Roman calendar on the first Sunday after the paschal full moon. Not only does the date change, but Western and Eastern churches celebrate on different schedules.

This year a coincidence of calendars means April 15 will be Easter for all the world's Christians. Pope John Paul II hopes this experience of unity will encourage the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant churches to find a way to agree on a joint date to celebrate Easter for the future as a sign of their commitment to Christian unity.
