Simpsons offends some believers, enchants others

The Simpsons premiere on the Fox network 12 seasons ago was instantly controversial for its portrayal of son Bart as an unapologetic sass-mouthed underachiever. The show also has drawn criticism for its treatment of religion.

Religion appears in 70 percent of episodes, "a far higher proportion than is found in most other programming," says John Heeren of California State University, San Bernardino. While some believers are just fine with the portrayal, others would prefer the show not deal with religion anymore.
