New life for ex-offenders

A St. Louis program connects them with the community

How did Kent's life turn around? A Community Re-entry Program operated by Lutheran Ministries Association, St. Louis, hires ex-offenders to work as "Care Team" members with students and nursing home residents.

Dick Tetzloff, the association's executive director, says Care Team members establish loving relationships with students, who live in an increasingly violent society, and the elderly, many of whom are lonely and welcome companionship. In this way the ex-offenders learn the joy of giving back. In the process they gain confidence, self-worth and acceptance as they re-enter their communities, Tetzloff says.
