When Dawn Richie’s nephew called to ask if she and her husband, Robert, subscribed to Newsweek, he wasn’t trying to sell them a subscription. “ ‘Well, you better go get a magazine,’ he told me, ‘I think your son is on the cover,’ ” she says.

Richie promptly went and bought one of two newsstand copies in Weatherly, Pa., population 3,000. They are $4, after all, she deadpanned.

The Richies are members of Zion Lutheran Church, Weatherly, but Dawn began her first call as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, White Haven, Pa., May 1. Their son, Bob, 25, is a Navy corpsman (medic) and is pictured on Newsweek’s April 7 cover helping a wounded soldier in Iraq.

Since communication was cut off after heavy fighting began, Bob Richie may not know he made the cover.
