Ashley Smith, a 26-year-old single mother, not only walked safely away from the apartment in which Brian Nichols had held her captive through the night March 12, but she was on the airwaves in the days following crediting her survival to her faith, the Bible and the best seller The Purpose-Driven Life (February, page 20).
And a best seller it is. News accounts of Smith’s story drove the book, by Rick Warren, from No. 79 in Amazon.com sales rankings to No. 2 two days later, according to USA Today. Nichols is charged with killing four people between March 11 and the early hours of March 12 when he abducted Smith in the parking lot of her Atlanta apartment.
