Continuing to experience operating losses, Augsburg Fortress, Publishers, eliminated 24 staff positions and discontinued some products in January.
The ELCA publisher made the reductions from a staff of 168 in Minneapolis and 67 in other locations in the United States and Canada, according to a Jan. 13 ELCA news release. The employees were given severance pay and job placement assistance or, in some cases, early retirement.
Augsburg Fortress President and CEO Beth Lewis said the cuts were difficult to make but necessary to reduce expenses.
"While our bottom line has improved since 2001, revenue has been declining for over a decade, and we continue to incur operating losses," Lewis said. "Putting our resources to work in a more focused way will help us serve the church and be financially stable."
