'And they were terrified'

New meaning for Luke's words

It's happened to all of us. For years we've read a story or text from the Bible. Then one day, suddenly and unexpectedly, a word or phrase leaps off the page. We wonder, "Why didn't I notice it until now?"  

That happened to me in Bethlehem just before Christmas 2000. I was there with a delegation of 26 former and current church leaders to bring words of encouragement and hope to beleaguered Christians, to visit with leaders on all sides of the current conflict and to promote the vigil for peace initiated by our ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson.
