The economic impact of Hurricane Mitch continues to be felt. Lutheran World Relief, which also distributes some ELCA hunger funds, has to date given more than $1 million in material aid. In addition to shipping health kits, quilts, clothing and medicines, LWR focuses on trauma and pastoral care and on grass-roots recovery efforts. The group works through ecumenical organizations--the Christian Commission for Development in Honduras and the Council of Evangelical Churches in Nicaragua. A video, Hurricane Heroes, will be in ELCA distribution centers by March.
The ELCA International Disaster Response and World Hunger Appeal hurricane relief effort, "Millions for Mitch," reached $1.6 million by Jan. 26.
Funds purchase supplies that are distributed by the Lutheran Church of
Nicaragua of Faith and Hope. Action by Churches Together, a joint
operation of the Lutheran World Federation and World Council of
Churches, distributes supplies in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
