The uncharted journey

When we must face death, our faith in God gives strength along our way

Recently, as Terri Schiavo hung in a “persistent vegetative state,” we watched two opposing camps battle over her right to live—or to die. A positive consequence of this struggle, played out in national courts and media, was that we began to see how important it is to think about and to prepare for the end of life. We asked, silently or aloud: “How would I like to be treated if I were in a similar situation?”

This special report seeks to help those of us who want to continue the discussion and do something about it. It guides us through the process of clarifying and acting on some of the moral, legal and family issues involved.

But first, two other questions confront us: “How do we, as mortal human beings, react to death or the prospect of death?” and “What is the role of faith in our struggle with death?” LeRoy H. Aden, professor emeritus of pastoral care at the Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia explores these questions.
