Pablo "Willie" Brito, 9, was to receive his first communion on Christmas Eve at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in the Bronx. Instead, family and friends set up an altar in the street and had communion in his memory Nov. 14. Willie and his mother, Margarita, were killed when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Queens Nov. 12.
It was a truly ecumenical gathering, said Martin Malzahn, vicar of Transfiguration. Roman Catholic sisters in the neighborhood wanted to pray the rosary for the family, so more than 100 gathered at the shrine of candles, flowers, photos and teddy bears outside the Brito home.
