into the desert

To find the God who ceaselessly whispers our name, we must journey to the place where God dwells. Scripture and long tradition in Christian mystical theology call this place "the desert." Whoever would listen deeply to God must forsake the comforts of hearth and home to brave the desert's barren mesas and endless horizons.

Once in the desert, blistering days and frigid nights will wear us down and finally slay us. This is the fate awaiting any pilgrim mad enough to venture forth into the wilderness.
