Nine years ago, Brad lost his battle with AIDS-related lymphoma cancer. Death came quietly Aug. 30, 1993, for our 31-year-old son — but not without a faith struggle. Baptized and confirmed in the faith of his parents and a graduate of a Lutheran grade school, Brad was sure that God couldn't love him or receive him into eternal life.
His behaviors during his early college days exposed him to the HIV virus, which silently worked within his body. When he realized that he was becoming ill, he hid what he knew from friends and family. In a deepening depression over his deteriorating health, Brad tried to take his life. He could no longer run from the truth. His anguish was deep, and he floundered in his crying out for help and forgiveness.
