Lutheran Disaster Response New York, a joint ELCA and Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod organization, was established after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to fill the unmet needs of those affected. LDRNY is a separate organization from Lutheran Disaster Relief, a national ELCA and LCMS group.
As of Jan. 4, about $7.4 million had been received from Aid Association for Lutherans, Lutheran Disaster Response and others, says John Scibilia, the effort's coordinator. Of that, $720,000 had been distributed by Jan. 4. The majority had not yet been spent, Scibilia said, in an effort not to "hold on to the money, but rather distribute it fairly and meet needs after government programs have run out."
