Earth & All Stars, illustrated by Preston McDaniels

With spring come sprouting leaves, flowers, green grass and, for publishers, new children's books. Here are some fun releases (reading levels: 4 to 8).

In Earth & All Stars, illustrator Preston McDaniels brings a hymn to life. ELCA pastor Herbert Brokering wrote "Earth and All Stars!" (Lutheran Book of Worship, 558), which adapts well to a book. A boy and his friends praise God through music, work and play. The whimsical, detailed and colorful artwork is appealing and full of activity. This is a book that just makes you smile. Augsburg Books is releasing Christopher Bear Makes Friends and It's Mine, Christopher Bear. Author Stephanie Jeffs' themes are relevant for preschoolers. In the first book, readers learn how Joe, with his bear Christopher, faces a scary situation--making friends on his first day at preschool. In the second book, Joe is back at preschool to learn about sharing. The artwork is charming, colorful, inviting and multicultural.

Augsburg is releasing two books in paperback by Bob Hartman. Cheer Up, Chicken! is a heartwarming tale about putting the needs of others before your own. A monk receives a chicken but decides that someone else could use the gift more. This chicken becomes the gift that keeps on giving in this fun story with a surprise ending. In Time to Go, Hippo, villagers struggle to get a hippo to leave a rice field. Readers learn about kindness to all creatures and patience as they see how a monk solves this big problem.
