Peaceful protest

Despite government edicts against demonstrations, in February hundreds of thousands of Malagasy people protested in Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital, over questionable presidential election results.

In February, Antananarivo Mayor Marc Ravalomanana said he'd won the presidential election but the government had denied him victory. The United States, France and the Organization of African Unity criticized his claim. Maintaining that neither Ravalomanana nor Didier Ratsiraka, the current president and former dictator, had won a majority, Madagascar's incumbent government set an election runoff for March that was never held.
