Angrily I watched the dejected man walk to his car while I waited at a church for a ride to supper after leading a conference. I heard the non-Lutheran pastor say to the man, "I'm pretty new here and have no authority to do anything for you."

Yes, you do, I thought. You have God's command to provide shelter for the homeless. You have James' question about what good it does to tell people: "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," without supplying their bodily needs (2:15-16).
