Jesus the questioner

Lively questions to enrich the community

Jesus is the answer. That statement of faith appears on bumper stickers and is announced from pulpits. Although its simplicity offends some, many admire its clarity.

Yes, Jesus is God's answer to human sinfulness: "The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Yes, Jesus is God's response to human alienation: "In Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself" (2 Corinthians 5:19). The crucified and risen Christ is God's resounding No! to the finality of death and God's Yes! to new life in Christ and the way of the cross.

Often overlooked is Jesus the questioner. Jesus audaciously asks questions when one might have expected him to be silent or speak words of comfort or conviction. His questions challenged friends and opponents: "Is it lawful to cure people on the Sabbath?" (Luke 14:3).
