Love makes the movies go round

'Spiritually literate' films show how it grows


Looking over our choices for the best films of 2001, we were surprised to see how many of them are about love. Of course, love has long been one of the most popular themes in the movies. Just think of your favorite films of all time, and see how many of them center on love of partner, family, friends, animals or country. Many movies also show characters struggling with self-love.

The best films about love — those we call "spiritually literate" — give us insights into how this universal feeling develops. They recognize that love isn't just something you fall into and then take for granted for the rest of your life. Loving is a spiritual practice. And you can get better at it over time.
