'You shall love your neighbor as yourself' (Matthew 22:39)


I recently taught in Japan, where a typical question arose: "What does the Bible say about homosexuality?" Since this topic is too complex for a short column, my only goal this month and next is to eliminate some basic types of Bible misreadings that confuse the conversation.

I intend to consider only one small piece of the whole topic so that, I pray, we can begin to find common ground. Homosexuality is controversial, and angry reactions or emotional manipulations from one side or another usually derail discussions of it. Could we pledge not to react hastily to each other's comments, but instead try to sort out specific pieces of the huge puzzle by which to find agreement? Then we could proceed carefully by asking better questions.
