Bishop elections

David G. Mullen, 59, as bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod, effective June 1.

When: April 27, on the sixth ballot, 348-133, over Richard O. Johnson, pastor of Peace Lutheran Church, Grass Valley, Calif.

Bio: Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Rio Linda, Calif. Graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Served congregations in California and North Dakota.

Replaces: Robert Mattheis, who retired May 31.

Peter Rogness, 56, as bishop of the St. Paul Area Synod, effective this summer.

When: April 21, on the fifth ballot, 267-210, over Susan Tjornehoj, assistant to the synod bishop.

Bio: Bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod since 1987, bishop of the ALC Southern Wisconsin District from 1984 to 1987. Graduate of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Served congregations in Wisconsin.

Replaces: Mark S. Hanson, who was elected ELCA presiding bishop.

Richard J. Foss, bishop of the Eastern North Dakota Synod, April 12, on the first ballot, with 423 of 500 votes cast.
