Church Council focuses on Middle East, Africa

The ELCA Church Council, meeting April 5-7, called on the U.S. government "to be resolute and determined" in seeking an end to the escalating violence in the Middle East. During the meeting, Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson talked over speakerphone with Bishop Munib A. Younan, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan (and Palestine).

Speaking from his home near Jerusalem, Younan told Hanson and the council that hatred is growing. "What we are worried about is that this crisis is creating a polarization on both sides," he said. "The call of revenge will be heard."

"We look highly to the ELCA as a companion in justice, peace and reconciliation," said Younan, adding that the ELCA "can be our voice to the U.S. administration."
