How do we respond to the controversies in the Roman Catholic Church regarding clergy sexual misconduct? Have the allegations created distrust of all clergy and a perception that the church protects pastors at the expense of congregations?
The ELCA has a clear zero-tolerance standard regarding such conduct (see page 16). In 1990, the ELCA Church Council adopted Vision and Expectations for rostered ministers. It states: "Ordained ministers are expected to reject sexual promiscuity, the manipulation of others for purposes of sexual gratification, and all attempts of sexual seduction and sexual harassment, including taking physical or emotional advantage of others."
Molestation of children is criminal conduct. We cooperate with law enforcement and comply with the requirements of state law regarding reporting of child abuse.
