Oklahoma children's home helps strengthen an American Indian community

This fall David Russell, 19, will enroll at Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. He plans to study art and maybe teach it one day. It's a future he could scarcely imagine six years ago.

"I was always getting into trouble," he says. "When I got here, I saw opportunities and learned what I could do."

"Here" is the Oaks [Okla.] Indian Center, an ELCA residential facility for American Indian youth on the edge of the Ozarks. Russell says living at Oaks broadened his horizons, letting him see the possibilities for his life and for the American Indian community.
