Sexuality task force seeks 'strongest argument'

The 13-member Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality met in Chicago for its first meeting, May 3-5. The group, appointed in March, is working with studies director James M. Childs Jr., professor of ethics at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, to lead the study mandated by the 2001 Churchwide Assembly.

The group will develop a study document to be used as the ELCA prepares to make policy decisions about the blessing of same-gender relationships and whether to allow gays and lesbians in committed relationships on the church's ministry rosters. These questions will come before the 2005 Churchwide Assembly. The group also will develop a sexuality social statement for consideration in 2007.
