O, Jerusalem!

How can the violence be stopped in this holy city and in the Middle East?

Prospects for peace in the Middle East looked as dim as ever early in May when I went to the Evanston, Ill., home of Rosemary Radford Ruether and Herman J. Ruether to talk about the new edition of their book The Wrath of Jonah: The Crisis of Religious Nationalism in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Fortress Press, February 2002). The couple — Rosemary, a theology professor at Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, and Herman, a political scientist — say they "write as Western Christians with special concerns about injustice, violations of human rights and an unending spiral of violence in the Middle East."
