In the house that God built

Jean and Bill Scheff make a home for foster children

Years before she even thought about becoming a foster parent, Jean Scheff surprised herself with her answer to a simple question. The question: What would you do if you received a lot of money? Jean blurted out: "I'd build a house and fill it up with needy kids."

She didn't think much more about it. For the next several years, Jean and Bill Scheff were busy working and raising their blended family — three of Bill's kids and one of Jean's from previous marriages.

Then the Scheffs started building a house in Clifton, Va., near Washington, D.C. "I think that's where God intervened in our life," Bill says. He and Jean are members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Centreville, Va., where both sing in the seven-person choir.
