Guatemalan Lutherans face attacks

On May 7, an unidentified motorcyclist fired two shots at Horacio Castillo, president of the Augustinian Lutheran Church of Guatemala (ILAG), before turning onto another road.

Then on May 24, three shots were fired into the ILAG offices, where ELCA missionary Stephen Deal and church secretary Karen de Gil were working. One bullet went into the garage door. Another broke though a window in the second floor office where Deal sat.

No one was injured in either incident. Police called to investigate the shooting at the church offices did not stop and question five armed men still at the scene or collect a bullet lying on the garage floor, Castillo said.
