I recently received a unique gift, an Episcope™ (pronounced epi-scope). It's a vest-pocket optical system of five lenses to help one see with precision things close up and far away. I was struck by the name, Episcope™, which is close to a Greek word that has been in conversations throughout the ELCA, episkopé.
Episkopé refers to the office of oversight, particularly that given to pastors called to serve in the office of bishop. As a church body, we continue to address how Scripture, confessions, constitutions, ecumenical agreements and context define the office of bishop.
