'This is a marathon'

In New York, people come to communion with tears

When Stephen Bouman,bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod, talks about Sept. 11, he quotes Lamentations. But he's also quick to recall the promise from the prophet Isaiah: "You shall be called, 'Sought out, a city not forsaken' " (Isaiah 62:12).

"There's an emotional density that's palpable," Bouman says. "It's around the corner from our consciousness. We see it all the time. People come to communion with tears for no particular reason."
