Rachel Thomas, a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Hooversville, Pa., was in her sophomore year at Shade High School in Cairnbrook just a few miles away from where Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville.
"Oddly enough, the most memorable time of that Tuesday was lunch because it gave me a sense of reality," Thomas says.
" At my table sat people from Roman Catholic, Methodist, Brethren and Lutheran churches," she says. "That day, before we ate, my friends and I paused for silent prayer, much like the rest of the nation. For one moment, we were united as 'one nation, under God' without having said the Pledge of Allegiance."
