Guard the treasure

'Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard' (2 Timothy 1:13)

Recently two United Church of Christ professors discussed with me the Formula of Agreement between their church body (and two other Reformed groups) and the ELCA. They said, "We were eager to have a closer relationship with Lutherans because you are so theologically stable." They hoped that association with us would strengthen their denomination's fidelity to the orthodox, catholic faith.

We Lutherans need constantly to question ourselves: Are we being steadfast in the faith passed on first by those who were eyewitnesses of the life, suffering, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus — and by all those in the global Christian church who have since joined the recipients of the outpouring of the Spirit on Pentecost?
