Foster care through Lutheran Services in America provides these for children separated from their parents

More than half a million children in the United States don't live with their parents. Removed from their homes by the courts, these 568,000 youth are "residents" of the nation's foster-care system. (That figure and others to follow are from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, based on its most recent data from 2000.)
