Military families say their goodbyes

Reader call: Faith is a source of strength and tension

As the possibility of a U.S.-Iraqi war looms, ELCA members with family and friends in the military shared their fears and hopes with The Lutheran.

Many have recently spoken emotional goodbyes to their families and friends before being deployed overseas. Some wait tensely for possible deployment orders. Others worry about unfinished college classes or scramble to arrange child-care. Family members speak of coping with unknowns, including separation from their loved one, and worries about the future. They also speak of their pride and love for their serviceperson. Here is what they told us about themselves, their faith and their congregations.
