The confluence of two Canadian rivers will be the meeting place for Lutherans from 76 countries July 21-31. Some 436 delegates from 136 member churches will meet for the Lutheran World Federation 10th Assembly in Winnipeg, Canada.
About a thousand delegates, staff, advisers, translators, observers and visitors also are expected to attend.
Founded in 1947, the LWF gives 62 of the world's 65 million Lutherans a way to speak and act as one. Member churches respond to disasters, fund development projects, promote human rights and explore theological issues. "Our participation in the [LWF] reminds us that we are Lutherans not in isolation but in a communion of Lutheran churches," said ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson.
