Bishops discuss lay presidency, outreach board action

At its March 6-11 meeting, the Conference of Bishops agreed to study the authorization of lay ministers to preach sermons or preside at communion.

Previously the bishops had expressed concern

about creating standards for lay presidency. ELCA theologians will present papers on the meaning and function of call and ordination, and the church's understanding and use of lay presidents, to be discussed at the bishops' October 2003 and January 2004 meetings.
