Church supper

Three days a week at the Lutheran chapel in Matsimbe and in 67 other villages, 50 children 5 years old or younger come to eat. For many it's the only nutritious meal of the week, says Mabel Madinga, director of this Lutheran church program. The dish is always the same: likoni phala, a porridge of soy, maize and sugar. The monthly cost is just $2 per child — much of the funding comes from the ELCA.
