Youth spend their school breaks serving others

Lazy, no ambition, spoiled, too busy hanging around the malls to care about others. While some say this definition could go in the dictionary under "teenager," today's youth are proving them wrong.

Through service projects many youth are spending their summers or spring breaks building or repairing homes, visiting the ill, collecting food and more.

About 2,500 youth participated in the servant events listed in Journeys for Youth and Young Adults from the Division for Congregational Ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (see box, page 32). That number doesn't inc lude churches that plan their own projects or participate in other organizations' events. For example, 4,000 youth attending the Western States Youth Gathering in Anaheim, Calif., picked up trash on state beaches.
