Follow the markers of the spiritual life

Life is a spiritual journey during which we are challenged to watch for signs of God's active presence in our everyday experiences. Can films help us see the world as infused with significance? We think so and have gone to movies for three decades with that goal in mind.

We identified 37 spiritual practices in our books Spiritual Literacy and Spiritual Rx as markers of the spiritual life: compassion, devotion, forgiveness, love and peace — to name a few. If you seek signs of God's presence in the movies, watch for illustrations of these realities.

Now that we've given away our trade secret for reviewing films, let's see how they appear in our five favorite movies of 2002.
