January-term: n. Term that lasts throughout the month of January (between rigorous fall and spring semesters) when college students try to find the most laid-back, relaxed class.
To combat this typical definition of January term, faculty and administrators at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., have been working together to offer a new variety of service-learning courses.
Even so, students were surprised to hear of an intriguing course at Gustavus called "Changing the World: Justice, Action and the Meaning of Life." The two of us were lucky enough to get spots in the quickly filling class and begin a journey of exploration.
