Missing Istanbul

The ELCA's ecumenical delegation began its journey in Geneva with several days of briefings with representatives of the Lutheran World Federation, the World Council of Churches, the Conference of European Churches, and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches.

A scheduled visit with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and other Orthodox and Islamic leaders in Istanbul was canceled because of security concerns related to the Iraq war. The delegation held a conference call from WCC/LWF headquarters with Mesrob II, the Armenian Orthodox Patriarch of Istanbul and all Turkey, who shared his affinity with Lutherans because his church also professes the real presence of Christ in communion
