Naw-Karl Mua first learned of the media attention he generated by reading a newspaper article on his ride home from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.
As Mua, pastor of Light of Life Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minn., read the article, he began to understand fully the diplomatic pressure and international outcry around his trial and imprisonment in Laos. Accused of involvement in the killing of a government soldier, Mua was convicted on lesser charges and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
