ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson was elected the 11th president of the Lutheran World Federation, 267-111, over Susan Johnson, the vice president and a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Johnson was the only other candidate after two others withdrew.
Hanson began his six-year term immediately after the July 31 close of the LWF Assembly. Since the LWF presidency is a volunteer position, Hanson will continue to serve as ELCA presiding bishop.
