Support your support

Let's talk about church support staff. Let's talk about church support staff. I just finished a brief period as a temporary church secretary, serving a large mainline Protestant congregation. After looking back on this experience and comparing it to my other diverse office experiences, I offer the following suggestions:

Don't skimp on office equipment. Spend the money for a reliable copier (one that will collate at least 15 copies at one time), a remote-access answering machine (so staff can call in for messages when the church is empty) and a computer with at least word processing and spreadsheet applications (today's spreadsheets are marvelous for everything from tracking pledges to following up on prospective new members). On a more advanced level, desktop publishing can give you elegant bulletins and newsletters that boost morale and help set the tone for Sunday worship without extravagant printing costs.
