Program offers help for musicians serving small congregations

Valerie Hess used to visit a monastery in Boulder, Colo., to help the abbey's only pianist learn to play the organ. In what Hess calls "trench teaching," she'd say: "OK, Sister Hildegaard, what are the hymns for this Sunday? Let's see how we can help you get through them better."

Her experience is the essence behind the Leadership Program for Musicians Serving Small Congregations, an ELCA effort to enhance singing and music, and deepen the liturgical worship of churches with modest resources.
