The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Graceful words

Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never .... You know how the saying ends. It's a lie, of course. Words hurt, wound, tear and divide, often for a lifetime.

They also heal, bless, comfort and make alive. They strain to bear holy realities and experiences of grace for which no words are ever adequate.

The following pages offer 32 words through which our gracious God hungers to speak that one Word of blessing, whom we celebrate in this and every season.

Last winter a reader suggested we offer a glossary for all who struggle with "church language." So we did, choosing many words with this season in mind. Consider it a Christmas gift from The Lutheran.
