While many teens spent the first weeks of summer enjoying freedom from school, a group from Madison, Wis., was learning about a freedom won through the civil rights movement.
Their trip was called Sankofa — an African word that means to go backward in order to go forward. To prepare, five youth and six adults from St. Mark Lutheran Church met with African American elders in Madison who have roots in the Delta. They then traveled to the Mississippi Delta to learn about the movement from those who lived it.
