The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Sharing global hope

3,564 attended this summer's Global Mission Events

One of the best kept secrets in the ELCA are the Global Mission Events held at various sites each summer.

This year a June GME was held at Whitworth College, Spokane, Wash., with 611 participants. In July the event at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., drew 1,502; and another 1,451 converged on the Susquehanna University campus in Selinsgrove, Pa.

For four days participants experience multinational worship, hear a variety of speakers, study Scripture, make music and take "classes" in the Global University taught by Evangelical Lutheran Church in America missionaries and people from sister churches abroad. Special programs are developed for youth and for children.

Among the speakers at this year's events were Marva Dawn, author of Reaching Out Without Dumbing Down; Musimbi Kanyoro, women's secretary for the Lutheran World Federation; Mitri Raheb, a Palestinian Lutheran theologian; and ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson.

Next year GMEs are scheduled for Wheaton, Ill., July 10-13, and Seguin, Texas, July 17-20.
