In Japan there is an annual observance called "Revere Your Elders Day." In many indigenous cultures, including Native Americans, tribal elders are known as the "wisdomkeepers," the ones who protect the spiritual legacy of the past and who have gained enough knowledge and experience to advise the community's members.
We thought of these attitudes toward elders when we journeyed to Florida in September to help Fred's mother, Harriett, celebrate her 90th birthday.
